A helpful Illustrated Guide for South Africa.

Is Abortion pill available in South Africa?
Yes abortion pills are readily available in South Africa.

There are several types of abortion pills in South Africa and all of them work effectively. Some abortion pills such as Mifepristone are quite expensive, difficult to get and not affordable by average women.

Then there is Misoprostol which is affordable and easy to find. The choice of abortion pill you want is yours. You will be able to get the abortion pills that you are looking for in South Africa easily.

Mifepristone and Misoprostol (cytotec) are the commonest abortion pills in hospitals, clinics and doctor’s rooms.

Where to get the abortion pill in South Africa

There are several ways you can get the abortion pill in South Africa. It all depends on your attitude towards the abortion pill and the whole abortion thing. It is quite easy to get termination of pregnancy pills in South Africa.

Some women believe it should come from a government hospital. That is possible. You can get it from a private hospital. It is also available in private clinics. You can also get it online.
At Your GP in Private Practice

Some GP’s doing abortion do have abortion pills. They are allowed to dispense abortion pills. Find out from your doctor. It is possible that he or she does abortion. All you have to ask if he does medical abortion. And if he or she answers in the positive, ask for abortion pills. You will get them.
Public Clinics and Government Hospitals

There are several Public Hospitals that do abortion up to 12 weeks. At these locations you will go through the normal process and get the pill at the end of it all. The only way to know if a public hospital does abortion with a pill is to go there. If free and patience is your thing, that is where to go.

Remember all government hospitals do not terminate pregnancies that are beyond 12 weeks, unless if the unborn is unhealthy or the pregnant woman. If you are normal and fetus is normal after 12 weeks they will not help you.

Patience is very critical in public health centers. The volumes of people looking for help is frightening. The health providers are overworked and often grumpy and aloof. But if you focus on your problem and shut out other issues it possible to get the abortion pill there.

The only difficulty is that you CAN NOT get the pills from the pharmacy without a prescription. And no doctor will give you a prescription to buy an abortion pill from the pharmacy.

As alluded to you earlier it will be online, at your GP or termination clinics or at hospitals. You will get abortion pills at clinics both public and private.

But in clinics and hospitals, it is not called buying abortion pills. It is a long winded process called medical abortion. At the end of the process you emerge with abortion pills.

If you go in there (clinics and hospitals), and brazenly request for abortion pills they will frown on you. You have to request for medical abortion and go through their acrobatics. The reason is that pharmacies have rules and regulations that control what they do. Abortion pills are highly controlled medication. So it is impossible to get them from any major pharmacy. It is not going to happen.

When you get to any pharmacy, they will ask you to bring a prescription well knowing you can not get it.

No doctor will give you prescription for abortion pills. The law requires doctors to supervise the process. So they can not write a prescription.

Abortion Pills at Clicks Pharmacy in South Africa

You will not get abortion pills at Clicks. It will not happen. No trick in the book will make them give you those pills.

Buy the pills online or go to an abortion clinic. That is what will work for you.
Abortion Pills at Dischem Pharmacy

Like Clicks pharmacy, Dischem will not sell to you abortion pills. It will not happen.

Government rules do not allow them to sell abortion pills at all. If you have read this do not bather to go there. You will not succeed.

We have already mentioned alternatives for you on this page. Choose what suits your interests and you will get the pills.

Remember no pharmacy will give you the abortion pills. They are constrained by government regulations.
How much does Abortion Pill cost in South Africa | Cheapest Termination of Pregnancy Medicine in South Africa

Abortion pills are different types and they are priced differently.

Misoprostol is the cheapest and Mifepristone is quite pricey.

There other abortion pills with differing prices as well.

Some pills are take in a combination and others taken as a single type. A combination will be more expensive than if you take one type.

The dose is not one size fits all. So the dose you get will also determine the price. A big dose is more expensive.

How far you are into your pregnancy (weeks into your pregnancy) will also determine what you pay. If you are late, you will need a big dose. Making it expensive.

Where you get the abortion pills also determines how much you pay for them. Abortion pills are free in Government clinics to a bit pricey in big private hospitals.

So it is difficult to tell you the exact price for abortion pills.

One thing is that you can get them affordably from R600 upwards. The price is determined by those variables mentioned about. R600 is the base price, for the right pills. And this is for Misoprostol only.

Any thing less than R600 comes with a risk of being fake or small dose. Just know what you are buying and you should be OK.
Mifepristone Price in South Africa

Mifepristone is very expensive in South Africa. A dose is in the region of R1000. Remember that you can not terminate with Mifepristone alone. You have to use it in combination with Misoprostol.

But, Misoprostol can work on it’s own. You have the information. It is your choice determined by your pocket. You can either choose to have both or Misoprostol alone.

You will not get Mifepristone pills at Clicks or Dischem so the price there is unknown
Misoprostol price in South Africa

It is a dose. The dose you get will determine the price. The starting price is R600 or so.

You have to be careful though with what you are buying. Misoprostol in South Africa comes sealed in a sachet. The sachet has all the details of the medicine. If you receive it opened it may be something else or degraded. Misoprostol degrades if exposed to air. It is only opened just before usage.

You will not get Misoprostol pills at Clicks or Dischem so the price there is unknown

Are there any other Abortion Pills other than Misoprostol?

The commonest home abortion pill in South Africa is Misoprostol (cytotec). In some situations Mifepristone is used in combination with Cytotec. But the majority of women in South Africa who use pills to terminate use Cytotec only.

Cytotec is easy to find and it is effective. It does not have long time side effects.

You can use it at home without the guidance of a doctor and you will be perfectly fine.

It induces a miscarriage in a controlled way. Cytotec dosage instructions are easy to understand and follow.

Does fly gel terminate pregnancy?
This pill is actually called Flagyl. It is an antibiotic used to treat all kinds of women infections. It is also used to prevent infections after abortion.

But it does not terminate pregnancies. Do not take flagyl in the hope that you will get an abortion. It will not happen. The commonest abortion pill is Cytotec. That is what you need.
Know more about the Abortion Pills
What is an abortion pill?

Abortion pills or abortion tablets are designed to bring on an abortion for a woman who is less than 13 weeks pregnant (that is less than 13 weeks since her last period).

They are designed to be used in abortion clinics. When a woman attends an abortion clinic, her medical history is taken (for example does she take any medicines, or have any other illness that may be affected by these tablets).

Any risk factors (such as an increased likelihood of excessive bleeding) are identified to make sure that the abortion pills would be suitable for her.

The clinic will also confirm that the pregnancy is an ongoing single embryo, less than nine weeks’ size, and that it is located in the womb. If the pregnancy does not fit into this category (for example a tubal/ectopic pregnancy, or a pregnancy of more than 13 weeks’ size) it would be unsafe for the abortion clinic to prescribe the abortion tablets.

In such a situation the abortion clinic would discuss alternative methods of abortion.

If suitable, the woman takes the pills, with a certain time-interval between doses, if she wishes to bring on an abortion.
You should not take the abortion pill if:

The abortion pill may not be right for all women. The following women should not take the abortion pill:

1. If you are in the 2nd trimester – after 13 weeks.
2. Have a known or suspected molar pregnancy — one in which the placenta develops abnormally
3. Have severe adrenal gland, heart, kidney, or liver problems
4. Take any medicine that should not be combined with the medications used in medication abortion — mifepristone or misoprostol
5. Take anti-clotting medication or have a blood-clotting disorder
6. Currently have an IUD. You will need to have it removed before having a medication abortion.
7. Talk with your health care provider to find out if medication abortion is likely to be safe for you. If medication abortion isn’t right for you, don’t worry. Another abortion method is likely to be safe for you.

More than half of women abort within four or five hours after taking the medicine. For others, it takes longer. But most women abort within a few hours.

It’s normal to have some bleeding or spotting for up to four weeks after the abortion. Only use pads for bleeding after an abortion.
How Does Medication Abortion Feel (Abortion from the tablet)?

(a) For most women, medication abortion is like an early miscarriage. It is normal for you to have bleeding and cramping. You might also
(b) feel dizzy
(c) feel strong cramps
(d)feel nauseous or vomit
(e) have diarrhea
(f)feel temporary abdominal pain
(g) have temporary mild fever or chills
Acetaminophen (like Tylenol) or ibuprofen (like Advil) can reduce most of these symptoms. Do NOT take aspirin.

You may feel more at ease if you have a trusted loved one with you during the abortion.
Can you eat before taking the Abortion Pills

Yes. You can eat normally before, during and after taking abortion pills. Eating has no effect on abortion with a pill. It will not stop the process.
Best Termination of Pregnancy Pill in South Africa

It is by far misoprostol (cytotec).

Misoprostol (cytotec) is cheap.

You can find it easily.

It can be used on it’s own.

Very effective. It terminates successfully a big percentage of pregnancies.

Can use it privately at home and you will be fine. It is safe.

Usage instructions of misoprostol are easy to follow.
How does the abortion Pill look like?

As already discussed above there are several types of abortion pills. You will find all kinds of pills in private and government hospitals.

But in the picture below we are going to show you the commonest abortion pill in South Africa. It is Misoprostol (cytotec).

The way this pill looks like depends on who manufactures it.

The commonest look is in the picture below. You just have to look for Misoprostol (cytotec) 200mg. That is the collect pill. But some are capsules, especially those manufacturers in India. Focus on the name, packaging and milligrams.

Misoprostol South Africa
How does the Termination Medicine work in South Africa?

If you take mifepristone and cytotec this is what happens.
Mifepristone is used to cut off nutrients to the pregnancy tissue or fetus. It readies the uterus for emptying. Mifepristone is taken a day before cytotec.

After a day of taking mifepristone, you are given cytotec that empties the uterus.

Mifepristone is taken normally with water. Cytotec is put in the vagina or under the tongue.

Abortion usually happens on the day of taking cytotec. It is characterized by heavy menstrual cycle with clots.

The bleeding can last between a few days to a few weeks. It is usually a drip of blood, nothing to worry about. After a while the bleeding will stop. You can test 2 weeks after taking the pill to see if it succeeded.
How do you know if the Abortion Pill worked?

If you are early you will not physically see anything other than experiencing heavy bleeding. This is followed by minimal bleeding for a couple of days. You may see clots. The size of the clots depend on how far you have been into your pregnancy.

Second trimester termination as it progress there is a very high chance of seeing a fetus.

Those are the two signs of termination being successful.

The most conclusive way to know is to test after two weeks or so. Testing kits should return a negative result after two weeks or so. If you test immediately after termination with a pill it will always be positive. The pregnancy hormones after abortion are high and the kit will show a false positive.

If you do not bleed at all then the pill did not succeed. Another sign of the abortion failing is if you bleed a little and for a short time say half a day. That is another proof that the pill failed.

But there is also delayed abortion. A pill can be taken today and abortion happens a couple of days later. Do not rush into taking a second dose of pills immediately. You should give the process a couple of days. Sometimes it works a few days later.
How long does Misoprostol stay in your system.

Two days or so and the medication should be completely out of your body.
When do I have sex after abortion with a Pill?

You should not have sex for say two weeks. You have to give the uterus a chance to heal. Putting anything in the vagina may lead to infections.

Do not even use tampons. Anything inserted in the vagina may lead to infections.

In fact take antibiotics after abortion. This is to protect you from potential infections.
